Denon AVR-S980H 7.2-Channel 8K AV Receiver
The Denon AVR-S980H is a 7.2-channel AV receiver designed to bring immersive home theatre, high-resolution music and advanced 8K video connectivity into a single entertainment hub. With seven discrete power amplifiers delivering 90 watts per channel, the AVR-S980H provides a flexible platform for 5.1, 7.1, 7.2 and Dolby Atmos-based home theatre systems.
The Class AB amplifier section delivers 90W per channel at 8 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz with 0.08% THD when two channels are driven. It can also deliver 125W per channel at 6 ohms, 1kHz and 0.7% THD. The speaker outputs support 4–16 ohm speaker loads, providing compatibility with a broad range of home theatre loudspeakers.
For immersive cinema sound, the AVR-S980H supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, while DTS Virtual:X provides virtualized height and surround processing with compatible configurations. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio provide support for high-quality lossless movie soundtracks.
Audyssey MultEQ room calibration uses the supplied measurement microphone to measure the connected speakers and optimize system performance for the listening environment. Two independent subwoofer outputs provide flexible bass-management options for 7.2-channel systems.
High-resolution music playback supports ALAC, FLAC, WAV and AIFF files up to 24-bit/192kHz. HEOS Built-in provides access to network music streaming and multi-room audio, while Apple AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi provide convenient wireless playback options. Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Internet Radio further expand streaming choices, subject to regional service availability.
The AVR-S980H provides six HDMI inputs, including three 8K-capable HDMI inputs, and two HDMI outputs with one supporting eARC. HDMI connectivity supports 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz pass-through with compatible sources and displays. HDCP 2.3 and support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, Dynamic HDR and HLG provide compatibility with current high-dynamic-range video systems.
Gaming features include Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Quick Media Switching (QMS), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), AMD FreeSync and 1440p gaming support, making the receiver suitable for modern gaming consoles and compatible gaming displays.
The AVR-S980H also supports multi-room audio through HEOS, along with an on-screen setup assistant and web interface for convenient configuration. Its combination of 7-channel amplification, immersive audio decoding, 8K HDMI connectivity and extensive streaming features makes it well suited to home theatres, media rooms, gaming systems and custom AV installations.
