Active subwoofers that add the low end a home theatre needs, from compact sealed units for apartments to large ported and architectural models for dedicated rooms. Brands include SpeakerCraft, Sonos, Bose, JBL, Bowers & Wilkins, M&K Sound, DALI and Ascendo. Driver size alone will not tell you what a subwoofer does in your room; placement, room dimensions and whether you need one or two units matter just as much. One subwoofer or two?
Two smaller subwoofers usually beat one large one, because they even out the bass across seats rather than leaving one seat boomy and another thin.
What size subwoofer suits my room?
For a typical Indian living room of 150 to 250 square feet, a 10-inch or 12-inch active subwoofer is normally enough. Larger, dedicated rooms benefit from 12 inches and up, or a pair.
Where should the subwoofer go?
Corners give the most output but often the least even bass. Starting along the front wall, a third of the way across, is a good compromise. We can advise on placement for your room.
